My niece Viki lives in Montreal and I have been trying to encourage her to connect with the burner scene in Montreal. She has not been to BM though one day she will come with me. I live in s.f. and have been going since 86. I work for the man with DPW. This town has more than we can handle in a week of stuff to do. What goes on in Montreal? I will be working with the flaming lotus girls this year...is there any projects in the making for this year that she could possibly check out? Any kind of events, fund raisers, gatherings of sorts? I believe that she is on this tribe.
If any one has any leads please let me know.
Thanks,
Robin Hood

Re: Looking for some leads on burningman related stuff
Sun, March 2, 2008 - 6:17 PMHi Robin,
I'm Science, the not-as-yet-confirmed Montreal Regional Contact (soon to replace Mr. Bad and Maj, the Amazing Two-Headed Regional Contact Ermeritus).
To be honest, there are not a lot of specifically BM-related events going on in Montreal (yet). Partly that's because Montreal has so very much going on that there is no shortage of Burnerish things to do.
But your post reminds me that we need to reschedule our open-house/video-night event, which was supposed to happen in February but didn't. The plan is to a bunch of the "Burning Man Film Festival in a Box" documentaries back-to-back on a projection system, as part of a meet-n-greet loft party.
Later we hope to hold some sorta big public Precompression event.
We also hold monthly Tuesday-evening café meetings. The next will be probably be on 11 March; I'll post about that soonish.
In the meantime, Viki (and all Montreal Burners) should make sure they're subscribed to the Bruleurs mailing list. I'll post the info in a moment as a new topic.
Best,
Science (Glenn)
PS: The Flaming Lotus Girls? Cool. They totally rock the planet!

Mon, March 3, 2008 - 9:40 AMHey Science do you know my evil twin in Toronto, Amazon?
Thanks for the info. Sounds like a good thing to do an open-house/video night event would be good. And yes The Flaming Lotus Girls Rock big time....so looking forward to this years project. Lots of cool flames that have not been done before. -

Re: Looking for some leads on burningman related stuff
Mon, March 3, 2008 - 8:08 PMHard to believe Amazon could have a twin -- but easy to believe she'd be the 'evil' one :)
I mostly know her from Toronto Decompressions and other parties. Those crazy Ontario Burners throw the very best parties!
Some shots I took of her at the Toronto non-Decom in 2006:

Mon, March 3, 2008 - 8:49 PMWhat are those crazy girls up to? I didn't see nearly enough fire art last year, compared to 2006. Colour me stoked! -

Re: Looking for some leads on burningman related stuff
Tue, March 4, 2008 - 8:44 PMMe and my buddy interviewed a couple of the girls in 2006 for a documentary on fire art that's *almost* done. Serpent Mother was super impressive. -

Re: Looking for some leads on burningman related stuff
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 10:01 AMLet me know when it is done, I would love to see it. It is a great bunch of peeps that make up FLG's You got to love it when the boys are called girls as well. Lots of talent and a ton of stuff to learn. Last year I went to a FLG meeting and ended up working with Rebeca and Yasi, 2 of the FLG's on a s.f. project (still working on it)
The park services hired 5 different artist to make fire pits for ocean beach. Ours are made of old water tanks shaped into the "primrose flower" the native flower of the area. They like ours best, as they take to the weather well. Our third one is pretty exciting because the flower is coming at you, as opposed to the other 2 where the fire pit is in the middle with the petals overflowing.
Here is a link cbs5.com/video/ if you are interested.
We got a lot of coverage from the press last year, even made it on the front page of the newspaper. -

Re: Looking for some leads on burningman related stuff
Wed, March 5, 2008 - 10:18 PMI heard about that project from JRS and remember going to the website and looking at the proposals. What a great idea for the beach! It solves a problem by adding art. Brilliant! -

Re: Looking for some leads on burningman related stuff
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 9:03 PMI have to go to Ocean beach before I go back to Montreal.
Haven't been there in years. -

Re: Looking for some leads on burningman related stuff
Sat, March 8, 2008 - 5:38 PMHey Robin,
The Boston Burners put on a regional burn every summer called "Firefly" which is in the "Northeast Kingdom" part of Vermont. The site is actually closer to Montreal than it is to Boston.
fireflyartscollective.org/
Tell her to check it out. It's a lot of fun. Definitely whets the appetite for Burning Man.
